CHILL!!.. no I’m not telling you to clam down it’s the name of the party “CHILL” held at the Cayman’s polo club with a pricey tag of $6000JMD-$7000 at the gate per person but unlike EDX this was both food and drink inclusive. Now don’t let the name fool you it may give the impression of a laid back vibe but these people know how to party upon entry your greeted with a sign of one of the sponsors and a photo op area for all those who want people to know their at chill Along with signature cups to get your drink on, Inside your greeted by a bar on the left and a view of the DJ booth on the right, a nice area set up for the VIPs with their own bar and another bar at the back near the food court so getting a drink will be of relative ease. Gate open at 4pm but the usual JA style patrons started to roll in late Around 5-6 with ladies looking classy & sexy and men all swagged out. The bars provided top shelf liquor you had your choices of flavoured vodkas, Appleton Rum, Bailey’s Rum cream and your Red and White wine for the classy drinkers as always. The food court provided some tasty options with an assortment of pizza from dominoes chicken cicadas, big cheese burgers (which i had to have) hot dogs, pasta, jerk chicken& pork also shrimp so there was more than enough choices to keep one satisfied. The party has begun with music from the likes of DJ Cruise and well-known Copper shot things started off with DJ cruise who got the party warmed up In the early stages while patrons flooded the bars and food court, by the middle of his set the dance floor was packed but in my opinion he wasn’t able to be consistent with his selection of songs, first he would get you hyped the bring you down which was a bit annoying but most people where probably too busy having fun to notice also during the event if the selfie enthusiast took a pic with their friends with hashtag Smirnoff their pics would be displayed on the screens at the party. Up next was Copper shot and they seemed to noticed what i did so from the start of their set they appeased the ladies much to the delight of the men with songs that had the ladies hands on their knees shaking what they mama gave em 😀 when the ladies worked up a sweat they switched to the hardcore dancehall songs which was well received from both male and females alike with the standard gun finger salute and bow bow bow!!! from their lips. Liquor flowing food munching and high tempo music the party was swinging DJ Cruise came back on the ones and twos and redeemed himself with a slew of Soca songs for the ladies and if the ladies are happy were happy 😉 followed by some recent hip hop that had the whole place dancing Nea NEA and all. As the night went on Copper shot took back over playing some dancehall to keep the crowd moving for those who weren’t ready to leave with patrons moving in unison to the latest dancehall moves “shampoo” (yes that’s the name of a dance lol) and kreech, as the party died down pleased patrons left the venue some had to be carried by friends after over indulging but definitely a successful event the party might be named CHILL but was farr from it.. Until my next review party peeps.
So after an hour nap from raving at EDX got up at 6 am to make my 2 hour journey to the parish of Portland for the renowned Portland jerk festival.
For my non Jamaican readers it is a food festival that focuses on the cooking style of “jerking” meat whether its chicken, pork, beef, and even rabbit yes the furry cute creatures :(…bastards and if you ever tried it or heard of it then you know it basically sets your taste buds on fire with the many spices and herbs and is a must have.
Arrived at 9 am hungover shades on to shield my eyes from the onslaught of the suns rays and sighed to myself this is gonna be a long day, the sun was out in his full splendour but complimented by a soothing breeze
The festival was kept at what the locals call Folly Ruins (interesting name I Should look that up) gates opened at 10 am with persons already lined up ready to go in but upon observations of the venue they weren’t finished setting up no food was cooked nor was any refreshment on sale and I was parched and hungover.
The venue was near the sea which provided a lovely view
And had me staring at it daydreaming how nice it would be to sit under the shade of the tree, embrace the cool breeze and pass out in a blissful sleep but any plans for that was thwarted by the No re-entry policy at the gate which meant if you left the venue you would be required to pay another $1,200 for a ticket to get back in a policy which would not sit well with many patrons to come (get to that later)
SO as the day went on persons flowed in some music began to play and cooking was under way been my first time to the festival I had pictured it a place where many jerk vendors would set up their jerk pans and tents boasting to patrons their own unique way of jerking meat but this year that didn’t seem to be the case, they had set up two mini buses which you had to purchase your ticket for food or drink then proceed to any vendor of your choosing to get food this later became a big issue as the line at the buses got real lengthy and just to get a ticket for food took up to an hour or more and if that wasn’t bad enough due to the late start of cooking food quickly ran out which meant patrons had to wait for food to be cooked which took up to another 2 hours to be ready even some complaining it wasn’t cooked properly due to the demand.
Lucky before this transpired I had seek out food from earlier been about Noon and still feeling parched and hungover I made my way across the venue in the blazing sun for nourishment, got myself a quarter pound of jerk chicken added some ketchup alone and Thank the gods I did cause the vendor must have soaked his chicken in peppers, my mouth was on FIRE and been in the afternoon sun didn’t help but famished I devoured every scrap of meat off those bones followed by two bottles of water and some ice cubes just to quench the fire in my mouth. Whew
Entertainment wise the organizers had live music more of the cultural kind with the playing of steel drums and performances by cultural dancers which didn’t garner much attention as people where too busy hiding from the scorching sun under tents and getting food.
My second attempt at getting food wasn’t so great the line the at the bus was so long I couldn’t bother to wait so I searched the venue and came upon a hot dog& burger stand, lucky I didn’t need a ticket to get food there but I had to wait in line and with half my body facing directly to the sun by the time I got my burger I felt like a burnt French fry all crispy& black lol
Getting a drink was just as tedious which meant joining the line to get a ticket to go to the bar, i wasn’t about to do this for the rest of the day and was already half baked so I found the medical tent and befriended the staff who had ice-cold water and a small AC unit set up, so throughout the day i would come back and forth to chat with them up and partake of their AC 😀 If only I could leave the venue without having to pay again I’d go down here
Now its evening going into the night the sun getting to set (thank God) which provided this lovely view.
A lot of people appear to be waiting on the sun to cool down cause that’s when the majority of the crowd showed up but inside the issue with the long wait for food was still a problem so much that people began to leave some persons spent even 15 min and left right after and the music was dull and uninspiring some of them exclaimed.
one of the biggest issue was the no re-entry policy which had many patrons getting into loud debates with the police and gate personnel over the practically of it.
By night fall there were a few performances from well-known dance hall artist such as Voicemail and the general himself Bounty killer but from my observation it didn’t do much to stir the crowd a lot were upset about the food issue and by the time bounty killer was on stage streams of people were leaving.
So in conclusion I managed to survive the whole day in a hungover state left the venue about 12am to get some well deserved sleep but Portland jerk festival from my view was poorly organized took way too long to get food and they may need to review there no re-entry policy for next year and despite the attempts to entertain they of all people should know a hungry man is an angry man. peace
Electronic dance music (EDM) the kinda music that’s filled with high energy and EDX Jamaica brought just that, kept at the Caymans polo club the perfect spacious venue for a concert with lots of parking, a pricey price tag of $6,500 per person drink inclusive food not included.
Blue strobe lights guided you to the entrance from the gate upon entering view of a massive stage and bar set up from both sky vodka and Appleton on both sides of the venue, a small section where you can grab some food, your Choice of either hot dog, jerk chicken or soup and a detox section with coffee for the persons who will go overboard tonight
Gates opened at 8pm put the usual jcan style person started pouring in around 12am with patrons dressed ready for a rave, soon enough the venue was filled and the bars were busy i got myself some bad dogg hot dogs then off to the bar to get my drink on.
The bars provided premium Liquor with sky vodka bringing out their new flavoured vodkas personal my favourite been the moscato but you also had your choice of red or white wine for the more fancy drinkers and Heineken beer for persons who aren’t so fussy, Appleton brought out the rum including their Appleton Reserve.
Now the party was in full swing musical styling came from the likes of Dj Kimkat, DJ Lima and the main act DJ Tydi the music selection was just right with a number of persons already hyped up.
Dj Kimkat started it off raising the tempo and getting everyone in a jumping frenzy.
By the time DJ Lima Came on stage I was on my fourth drink of vodka& cranberry, glow sticks were given out to the crowd and everyone was dancing jumping and waving.
Then dancers came out and the energy was amazing the tempo rose I bumped my fist so hard to the base drop my watch tore off lol, When DJ TYdi came on stage to further increase the tempo it got complimented with fire works (see vid)
Now that I’ve lost count of how many drinks I’ve had am totally hyped sweating from all the dancing but this party was no where ready to end
All in all it Was a great concert the liquor flowed the woman were out in their splendor (sorry no pics of em 😦 ) and the energy and music had you dancing all night long its was my first time attending EDX but it def won’t be my last.
